Quitting Social Media: How Instagrammer Essena O’Neil is challenging her followers
“There is nothing real about this.” – Essena O’Neil
Essena O’Neil, an 18-year old Australian Instagram ‘influencer’ turned model and most recently, activist, has ‘quit’ social media, leaving behind over 500k followers on Instagram, as well as another 200k on her Youtube channel in hopes of motivating her followers to re-align their perspectives on our increasingly social-media driven world.
O’Neil gives genuine insight into the business of social media as she deleted over 2000 photos from her instagram account, leaving only her inspiring messages and her ‘sponsored posts’ re-edited with an honest and authentic behind the scenes story of what it took to obtain the final shot.
O’Neil’s story is greatly inspiring and highlights the importance of making the vast majority of users aware of the differences between social media and real life.
As youth culture continues the dangerous trend of chasing ‘likes’ as a measuring stick for self-worth, O’Neil’s message that “Social Media Is Not Real Life,” needs to be echoed by more of these so-called ‘influencers’ or we risk being witness more casualties either emotional or physical.
Maybe it’s time to make some changes alongside Essena. To read more about Essena and her new journey, check out her website to hear her story first hand, or watch her video below for a full explanation of her reasoning.
