NYC: the new Mecca of Menswear?

New York City is set to host the first all menswear fashion week starting on Monday, and it’s something the industry has been wanting for quite some time.

Smaller brands have always had difficulty finding a place in European trade shows because of high-end label priorities and costs, but now, they will finally be able to showcase their work in a strictly menswear environment in their home country. In previous years, any menswear shows in the United States were just randomly mixed in with the more favoured women’s shows.

The other advantage to hosting the event in New York City next week is that there will be several menswear tradeshows in the city like Capsule and Project Show. This gives the opportunity to buyers to purchase directly from the runway to the market.

“It makes more sense to sell while you’re showing, and the American menswear editors and buyers saw a lot of homegrown talent in their backyard. They felt it was time to put that forward.” (Steven Kolb, CEO of CFDA)
