Straight Outta Compton: not just hip-hop history, but American history
There has been no shortage of hype & coverage for this biopic of Compton legends N.W.A.. From meme filled “Straight Outta__” news feeds (Yes, even Bette Midler made one), to Dre’s synchronized new album dropping and Detox theories drifting around the internet, it’s no wonder the LA premiere of Straight Outta Compton had so many positive vibes around it.
The event was also relatively drama-free most likely thanks to the heightened security hired for the event. Considering the past issues surrounding the film’s production, the LAPD brought out extra security and even got members of the department’s Gang Enforcement Detail to come in a ‘better safe than sorry’ approach.
It’s already set to recoup its $29 million production budget over this coming weekend, which is no doubt a sigh of relief to it’s producers.“It was one of the hardest movies I ever had to get made. It’s been a four-year process and that’s just actual process.” remarked Ice Cube.
The film portrays early rap legends N.W.A.’s story of living on the streets of LA to breaking through to the music mainstream and all the struggles in between. All of the original members of the group were on the red carpet alongside their counterparts in the film to come together to promote their own history of Los Angeles and hip-hop, that surely resonates and parallels many parts of American history as a whole.
The film is released everywhere this Friday, August 14th.
