Memories of SXSW – Part Two
Here is the next part of our look back into SXSW 2015 with our music editor @mensathedj..
DAY TWO OF WRGxSXSW began where it ended last night: at Barcelona. Renowned designer Mike 2600 & Fool’s Gold Sammy Bananas set off the Sophisticated Funk Showcase with some nifty disco. It was such a refresher to the palette after hearing “Coco” 20 times the night previous.
A detour at Austin Convention Center led me to Flatstock: the amazing market place tour posters. Artists from worldwide known for their outrageous promotion artistry put their past work on full display. Such a beautiful sight. Eye candy galore.
Venturing into the afternoon brought me to a forward thinking showcase headlined by Kitsune french house pioneer Fred Falke, and tropical bass (and most recent Mix Series contributor) DJ Theory! Theory was true to form bringing his tropical bass to the masses. A little reggae never hurt nobody!
Across the street, the Critical Beatdown massive were about to get their day-night party started at Dirty Bills. DJ Mike Rawk set off the night and quickly populated for the next ten hours with its cavalcade of DJ’s.
As the night progressed, the intensity of the events spiked. A quick peek into the Migos/Carnage concert showed absolute sweaty mayhem even before the headliners touched the stage.
A quick exit was the wise move as Austin’s Finest shut down the venue for everyone’s safety.
In a more spacious setting, the good folks of New York’s Webster Hall House Party imported their crazy vibes but with a tinge of down south hospitality. While residents Jasmine Solano and Just Blaze waited in the wings, New Orleans legendary producer Mannie Fresh hit the decks and had the crowd in his clutches, playing regional hits from East, West & South.
A quick pedibike across town (the only way to ride, by the way) to Bungalow ended my night to catch the friends at Okayfuture throw down their future beats showcase. Salva & UNIIQU3 kept the people going till the lights came on.
Stay tuned for more WRGxSXSW goodness!
