Call it electro-goth, call it new wave goth, the music that Toronto-based trio Austra is making, is well, awesome. With their danceable yet dark beats and lead singer Katie Stelmanis’ powerful and ghostly voice, I’m hooked. Fellow females Dorian Wolf on bass and Maya Postepski as beat programmer/drummer, make up the other 2/3 of this group.
With her professional training with the Canadian Opera Company, Stelmanis has constantly changed and evolved having released albums independently under her name as well as under the name Private Life. She also played in the band Galaxy with Wolf. Postepski previously was part of the band Spiral Beach.
Signed locally in Canada on Paper Bag Records and internationally on London, UK-based label Domino (major!), the band released their first album, a 3-track EP Beat and the Pulse back in February. In March, iconic BBC Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac shared their track Lose It on her blog as a free download.
Out Tuesday (May 17th), is Austra’s 11-track album Feel It Break. Mixed by Damian Taylor (Björk, UNKLE, The Prodigy), these girls weren’t effin’ around. You can’t help but not think of Kate Bush and The Knife as you listen to their music and to me, that’s a good thing.
