Sleeman’s Lift Lightens Things Up

Yesterday afternoon, a few of us decided to get out of the office and grab some lunch along the canal. Another hot and humid day, we knew we had to take drinks with us. I mean, who doesn’t love an afternoon beer? We thought it would be a good time to try out Sleeman’s new beer: Lift, their latest drink made with coconut water. With another thunderstorm on its way, we knew we had to make the most of the good sunny weather.

We headed over to our neighbourhood favourite, Sumac, picked up lunch and then made our way to a little park near the canal. The park had a good mix of people in it, your typical sportsmen working out with kettlebells, bikers racing along the path making the kayakers on the canal look like they are moving in slow motion, and people like us, looking to get some fresh air and a drink in between work. We found a bench in the sunlight behind all the commotion and got to munching. First things first though, we cracked open our beers.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, beer made with coconut water? Weird. Well, you’d be surprised. It’s pretty refreshing and has maintained a good alcohol percentage (4%). The flavour is very light (no, it doesn’t really taste like coconuts), and at first gives you the feeling you’re drinking something like coconut water, but with the beer taste.

Beer has been around and enjoyed for centuries, but more recently, there has been a surge of microbreweries popping up. They have been experimenting with different flavours and hops, so it was only a matter of time before testing out new trends like coconut water for the healthier minded crowds. [A little reminder that beer does have health benefits…]

Even if you aren’t scientifically literate, it’s obvious that beer is never going to be a replacement for water. It’s always going to be alcoholic and alcohol will always leave you in need of water. But there has been a lot of research going into the consumption of alcohol and maintaining hydration, which is why marketing towards performance based crowds made sense. Athletes are notorious for post-game celebration and letting loose in the off-season. Although they are generally used to the stricter athletic regimen, they aren’t exempt from getting dehydrated.

We left the park feeling a bit more relaxed and definitely full from our food, but thankfully not bloated from our drinks. So whatever your palate desires, there will always be a good option for you. Sleeman’s Lift is made for summer afternoons and I’m glad we had the chance to get out of the office and test it out.

 As always, drink responsibly!
