GOAL MTL: charity soccer tournament to take over Percival Molson Stadium this Sunday
Over the past five years, GOAL MTL has been working on some really important initiatives for the city of Montreal and are truly all about community.
The annual charity soccer tournament has raised over $125,000 to date for local charities & hopes to reach its target for this year of $50,000.
The event takes place on Sunday, July 26th at the Percival Molson Stadium and will feature 24 teams made up of local media and celebrities, restaurant and bar staff, and musicians. Burgundy Lion, Tommy’s Cafe, evenko, Apt. 200 & SUWU, L’orignal, Le Brenmar, Le Richmond and tons more will all have teams ready to compete outside the kitchen and office and on to the field to win the coveted Lions Cup Trophy.
The 24th team will be comprised of All-Stars that took part in the GFI Futbol game held back in May, including Chef Antonio Park, Wilder Weir, Patrick Langlois, Chuck Hughes, DJ Jojo Flores as well as being coached by Lloyd Barker (former Impact and Jamaican National team player), and the always entertaining Noel Butler (of TSN 690)
The two charities receiving this year’s donations are the Tyndale Saint-Georges Community Centre, which leads education and literacy programs for children and adults alike in Little Burgundy, and Community Cares Montreal, which strives to engage and empower Montreal youth in leadership programs.
Wishing you made a team this year? Don’t worry- there are still lots of ways you can help out. There are raffle tickets on sale at Burgundy Lion, Bishop & Bagg, Brits & Chips, and Newland & Jump, for 10$ each. The raffle prizes are pretty impressive too: 50,000 Aeroplan Miles, signed jerseys from Montreal Canadiens, New York Red Bulls and Montreal Impact, dinner with John Bowman of the Montreal Alouettes, signed guitar from rock singer Jonas, as well as weekend passes to Osheaga, Heavy MTL and Ile Soniq! The raffle tickets will also be available at the tournament if you can’t make it to one of those locations.
GOAL also has a Go Fund Me page for online donations.
The tournament is open to the public too, and what better thing to do on a Sunday in Montreal? There will be all of your favourite food trucks, drinks and DJs there, as well as fun games like Sumo soccer (you know you’ve always wanted to try it.)
