Dope Girl Fresh Interview

So why the name DGF (Dope Girl Fresh) What is it supposed to mean?
Laina: A Girl that does it BIG no matter the situation. A girl who does it big no matter the situation, an individual who is unique and respects herself before anything.. What we do is re-work vintage clothing & accessories into higher-end vintage clothing & accessories.

Angie: We’ve been doing this type of thing since we were small, making each others outfits and trinkets while growing up together, seeing what worked and what didn’t and coming up to the mutual consensus of “I like this, this is cool.”

Was this something you both always wanted to do?
Laina: We both grew up in Surrey, British Columbia as the typical “little white girl & little brown girl” both of us had huge Hip-Hop influences growing up and that was where and how we gained a lot of our confidence, If you had known us then you would know we were two of the shiest girls ever! Growing up together we continued on designing outfits for fun here and there. There were definitely a few outfits my boyfriend wasn’t too happy about; there were times where there would be weird shit like some acid washed overalls with faux hawk and white rubber boots.

Since we are on the topic of fashion, what do you ladies think is the biggest fashion faux pas out there right now?
Angie: For guys it’s Mohawks and shades in the club.

Laina: For guys it’s True Religion Jeans and for girls it’s that blonde hair with black underneath.

What kind of stuff can girls expect to find in the current DGF collection?
Angie: Whenever I look at her stuff (Laina), I always think if ever I’m out shopping, this is the stuff I’d wanna see in a store and i’m not only saying that because she’s my best friend and she’s crazy talented, but it is honestly what i wanna see in stores.

We work in the retail industry and i know that a lot of the stores need more stuff like DGF’s plus every girl that gets our stuff no matter who it is, a business professionals, Models, Nine-to-fivers, they all tell me that the stuff is comfortable and FUN to wear; that it made them standout. I love feeling sexy and comfortable and the girls that shop DGF are girls that like to have fun and like to feel sexy and comfortable.

How big of a part does “FUN” play in the brand?
Angie: I think its everything. We both work 9-5…(laughter) Let’s just say we are not exactly too satisfied with our day jobs, but that is exactly why we do DGF. It’s something we do on the side and its something we genuinely enjoy doing. It never feels like work and thats what makes it amazing.

Laina: It never feels like work… well somedays it does, but we do very much enjoy it. There are some long days, for example, once a girl from Bora Bora called us asking if we could prepare her wedding gown in four days, it was a very stressful time in our lives but we made it work. It was a great learning experience for the future, and made it all worth it when the bride saw the dress and yelled “THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED!! I told her she didn’t give us much time but it was her honeymoon and we wanted it to be special and knowing that it was perfectly fitted for her, made it all worth it.

So for those that don’t know, Tell us about the DGF shopping parties and how this event got started?
Angie: We first started it to get dope clothes on dope girls and that’s all, then we started our first catalogue shoot and we noticed how dope and talented these girls we were working with really were, so we thought we had to keep this going on.

The girls in the lookbook and those working behind the scenes were all so confident, talented and driven and were all the things that DGF is, that we started to revamp our image and began making the brand all about the girls and used the brand to empower each other. We wanted to give a chance to the girls to empower themselves and meet with us so we can get to know who’s wearing our stuff.

Laina: Oh yeah…and to buy some of our cool stuff too (laughter).

Angie: It’s cool because there so much love within the brand that the vibe has always been so good and chill. We decided to open  up our place and have more of these gatherings where we could meet our customers but also have it be a private little party.

So im sitting with ya’ll at one of your shopping parties right now and you say you get real comfy with whoever is invited to these mini-events. Can you both tell me your secret pet peeves about each other!?
Angie & Laina: WHAT!?!

Go on, one thing you can’t stand about eahcother along with one thing you love about the other. There must be something you guys work with eachother almost 24/7, i’m sure SOMETHING annoys you about eachother…
Angie & Laina: (simultaneously) I honestly cant say anything bad about you, there’s too much love (they hug).

!? Enhhhhhhhhhh! Wrong Answer!
Angie: Seriously there’s just too much love.

Laina; It’s true, maybe in the past when we were younger, but in the past few months I’ve had so much crap going on, and one of my few real friends has been Angie and she’s always been there for me and vice-versa, we have a solid foundation.

Is there anything new and exciting coming up in the near future for DGF? and where should people go to see your stuff?

Angie: (shouts) WWW.DOPEGIRLFRESH.COM!
Right now DGF is going through a transition where as we started with the custom jacket, we are both gonna start going into a private line, accessories and a high-end vintage section. Get ready! big things are happening and we will definitely continue to make the custom denim jackets that the girls love.

Speaking of the girls, any shoutouts?
Angie: Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

Laina: First and foremost thank you to all the girls that chose to wear our shit and look amazing! this is going to sound so cheesy but, we were scared as hell trying to startup DGF, just remember that whatever you want in life you can achieve it, never be afraid to try something new, you never know what it will become!
