A Sheer Thing

Sheer maxi skirts and blouses. Sheer paneling on dresses and booties. Yes, we’ve been seeing it on the runway since the Fall 2010 shows. But with the way the fashion cycle works, we know that this trend is only now hitting the streets (in warmer weather climates).

With spring seeming too far away just around the corner, it’s important to start thinking about how we can incorporate this look into our wardrobe without baring too much. Like an outrageous print (see: leopard print, multicolored snakeskin, etc.), going sheer must be done mindfully. Effortless chic is about balance. A see-through top paired with a peek-a-boo maxi skirt will make you look more like you’re ready for a night in than a night out.

For those of you who are daring and perhaps a little bolder with your sartorial selection, you may feel inclined to pair a sheer button down blouse with nothing but a bra underneath. This actually looks great paired with skinny jeans, high-rise jean shorts, or even a pencil skirt. You may want to look to the models of the Nasty Gal website for a little inspiration:

Feel free to accessorize however you feel fit – make it your own. Sheer maxi skirts (don’t forget a slip) look great with roughed up biker boots or a pair of the ever so trendy combat boots that have now become a staple item in most of our wardrobes. Note the first image at the top of the page. Oversized 70’s double breasted pea coats work just as well as shrunken leather jackets as a topper.

Translating the sheer look into something a little more glam is easy. Sheer fabrics were made for evening wear. A dress with sheer paneling is sexy, not slutty. Even something that bares a little more skin is not so hard to get away with, providing you have a full-bottomed body suit underneath a la Dolce & Gabbana or Charlotte Ronson Fall 2010:

Keep in mind that this trend can easily be translated into something a little less daring. If you’re not comfortable baring you legs, arms or midriff – that’s ok. That’s why shoes were invented! There are many different brands that have put out a version of the bootie with a lace front. Aldo put a great one not too long ago. Pair the boots with some skinny jeans and a long sleeve tee. Not only will you be on point, but having something special on your feet can never hurt.

Let’s part with a few inspirational photos from a couple fave tastemakers Pixie Geldof and Abbey Lee Kershaw:
