Gloves

When the temperature drops down around freezing, the extremities are the first to feel the effects. A good run glove is hard to come by, especially one that can keep your digits warm instead of being another distraction from enjoying your run.

OAKLEY – DIAMONDBACK FLEECE GLOVES

You can’t winter run without a solid pair of gloves. Sure, your hands will inevitably get so hot that you’ll want to take them off, but during those first 10-15 minutes of sub-zero running, they’re crucial.

I’ve found that a lot of running gloves are great at insulating, but take a while before they have any effect, making them less than ideal for chilly days. The Oakley Diamondback Fleece gloves don’t have that problem. Slip them on, and your hands are instantly warm and snug. But most importantly, they’re also breathable, so no worrying about overheating on the trail.

The Good:
Super soft materials keep your fingers toasty.
Nice fit and breathable.
Grip is super adhesive so you won’t drop your phone, water bottle or hockey stick.
Great for high-fives!

The Bad:
The words “OAKLEY” scrawled a million times on the palm. Talk about overkill.
Phone “touch” technology is a little spotty, and only works for rudimentary functions. Stick to emoji messages with these on.

The Verdict:
If you’re looking for an affordable pair of winter gloves, the Oakley Diamondback Fleece gloves are a safe bet. It doesn’t seem built for running, but they get the job done. You might not glove them, but you definitely won’t hate them.

LULULEMON – SURGE RUN GLOVE

Hand protection is essential to any cold weather run and finding multi-functional yet aesthetically pleasing design is hard to come by. The Lululemon Surge glove, made from a water resistant fabric featuring a sleek design, tech-friendly fingers, and a thumb with soft fabric to wipe your nose.

The Good:
The gloves were very comfortable to wear and not too bulky.
Wrist snaps so both gloves are together in your bag and don’t get lost.
Tag on the interior was easily removed avoiding irritation.
The reflective squares on index finger provided great night visibility.
Anti-bacterial fabric so no smells before or after sweat sessions.

The Bad:
The tech fingers didn’t work at all, and it was very clumsy having to take off a form fitted glove to check phone screens.
Not particularly warm, especially during runs below -2˚C.

The Verdict:
While I liked the look and feel of the gloves, I am not particularly convinced that these would be sufficient for winter running. A good option for early to late fall but wouldn’t suggest for a Montreal winter or anyone with poor circulation in their hands.

LULULEMON – RUN FAST GLOVES

The Lululemon Run Fast Gloves are adaptable running gloves designed with a stowable finger hood for extra warmth when needed. Simply put, it means that you can turn these bad boys from finger gloves to mittens in seconds.

Adding extra warmth on extreme cold days, or at the start of your run while you are still warming up is a great bonus. They’re also great in drizzly or wet-snow conditions as the hoods are water repellent.

The gloves also boast tech-friendly fingers so that you can operate your smart phone mid run without removing the gloves. To my surprise the fabric is extremely responsive; possibly the best touch sensitive gloves I’ve ever worn.

The Good:
The stowable finger hood allows for on-the-fly temperature regulation.
The smartphone friendly fingers are surprisingly responsive and takes the frustration out of changing songs.
Fabric is ultra lightweight and comfortable.

The Bad:
Lightweight design means they won’t stand up to extreme cold – stick to temps of -8˚C and warmer.

The Verdict:
At the end of the day, these gloves are great all around performers. The stowable finger hood allows you to temperature regulate based on your own needs, and the touch-sensitive fabric makes changing songs and pausing your running app a breeze. Just make sure you stick to moderately cold temperatures if you are prone to chilly fingers.

LULULEMON – RUN WITH ME GLOVES

These Lululemon gloves are made of the super thin Rulu™ fabric. I found at first my hands were still pretty cold and they took a while to heat up. Around zero degrees these did keep my hands warm and since they are made of breathable fabric, they didn’t sweat. But as soon as it was -5˚C, my fingertips stayed cold and I had to rub my hands together when running.

These gloves have tech friendly fingertips and it was really cool to be able to use my running app or change songs without having to take off the gloves. They worked really well. Another small but much appreciated detail was the snaps. I tend to lose one glove or waste time trying to find pairs lost in your room or bag but you can just snap these together which is super practical.

The Good:
Cute and comfortable.
Tech friendly gloves that keep your hands warm when it isn’t too cold out.
The light reflective trimming and the snaps are the small details that make these gloves stand out.

The Bad:
In colder temperatures, I would recommend something warmer.

The Verdict:
Great tech friendly gloves for warmer winter runs.

LOLË – SHANTA GLOVE

When it comes down to it, running gloves are one of the most crucial elements in your winter kit. Keeping your extremities warm is essential, as cold feet, cold hands or cold head will send you back indoors faster than running out of breath.

The Lolë Shanta gloves are excellent for above zero to way below zero but won’t get you through those torturous -20℃ evening runs. Very few gloves actually will. Despite that, the versatility of the removable finger hood, which turns your gloves into mittens or your mittens into finger gloves is unparalleled. The glove hood being made out of wind-resistant materials guarantees that no matter how windy the trails get, your fingers will stay toasty.

The Good:
Option to turn gloves into mittens
Pocket for mitten hoods
Windproof material
Can withstand cold up to -10℃ (4℉)
Tech-friendly fingers

The Bad:
At a price above $60, you’d hope they’d be the only gloves you need all winter long

The Verdict:
These gloves have almost all the elements you’d want from your winterized accessory. The windproof mitten hood that tucks away into the pocket on the back of the gloves, the tech-friendly fingers and the ability to withstand temperatures up to -10℃ (4℉). Their only downfall is that Canadian winters can get drop way below their warmth capability.

OAKLEY – GORE WINDSTOPPER GLOVE

When you’re considering buying running gloves, the first thing you think of is, “are my fingers going to be warm enough?” Most “winter” gloves are actually more fit for the fall season rather than winter, either made of thin fabrics that are too light to withstand anything below zero or thick and bulky.

In Canada, we get hit with extreme cold pretty much all of January, February and well into March. During these months our winter is at another level, and without the proper accessory you will need to double glove up, especially for longer runs.

The Good:
Touchscreen friendly (thumb and index).
Windstopper shell provides water and windproof technology.

The Bad:
Any winter run over 30 minutes or below temperature -10℃ these gloves will need some hand warmers.

The Verdict:
The Gore Windstopper Glove is a lightweight, high-powered accessory for your winter running. Although they hold their own up to about -10˚C they might need to be layered or partnered with a hand warmer for longer runs. A great feature is that their easy to slide on, even mid-stride, and off and you will love their snug fit.
