Rick Ross – Teflon Don

Ricky Rozay’s third solo effort has among the best response short of Drake and Eminem’s summer releases and with good reason. Everything leading up to this release was stacking up against Officer Ricky. Namely 50 Cent tried to Ja Rule his career.

In 2005 Jeffery wore the same shoes and fell apart. Ross had twice as much to lose; he was a Correctional Officer (insert ‘that’s not rap music’ here, Curtis took his baby mama shopping in NY for fur coats and published diss records and videos publicizing the entire affair (no pun).

Add to that, “Freeway” Rick Ross, the actual convicted drug dealer is suing for using his likeness, it could have spelt the end for yet another rapper.

Rick did just the opposite. He gathered a serious A-list roster to bless the record with guest appearances. The usual suspects Kanye, T.I., Jay, Gucci, Drake, and Diddy to name a few. What really stands out are the performances by other guest features including Erykah Badu, John Legend, and Cee-Lo each lay down choruses that show some range from the super sized rapper.

Tracks like Free Mason (ft. Jay-Z) and Tears of Joy (ft. Cee-Lo) stand out showing some versatility while current club smash B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast) with Styles P are basically a 2010 version of Hustlin’.

M.C. Hammer should be called B.M.F. pt 2 and should have been a mixtape joint. It can’t stand up with the rest of the record. The most disappointing part is waiting 3:30min to get a weak Gucci verse.

I really expected to hear a Game feature. The two have complementary voices, share a beef with 50 Cent, and the slow beats, and both are putting out summer albums it seemed destined to happen.

Hate him or love uncle Ricky, this might be his best overall record of his career.
