Redesigning the Standard Ball Jar
In a possible attempt to capitalize off of hipsters everywhere, designer Aaron Panone has come out with Cuppow, a durable, BPA free, recyclable drinking spout lid designed especially for the standard Ball jar. The jar, an iconic receptacle that can be found in hipster homes around the world, happens to be heat resistant. So Aaron might be on to something with this portable coffee jar concept.
The idea itself is quite simple, and well executed. Choosing a semi-transluscent lid was a good choice as it keeps you safe from spills without completely overshadowing the jar’s general appeal. Pairing up with Repeat Press for the packaging design didn’t hurt either.
Overall, an interesting idea then. But part of the appeal of the Ball jar lies in that it’s the poor man’s cup. It’s d.i.y. It evokes a certain old school cooking vibe (does anyone under 30 know how to make preserves anymore?) Creating an accessory for the Ball jar kind of nullifies it’s street cred.
Check out the video below and decide for yourself. A truly well executed object, but an unfortunate context.
Then again, the designer himself has said : “At first I thought that it was a dumb idea, but the more I thought about it, the less dumb it sounded (and now I don’t think that it is dumb at all!).”
So, maybe it’ll grow on us.
