PlayStation Holiday Preview Event

The PlayStation Holiday Preview Event party was held at the recent renovated Sony Center (formerly the Hummingbird Center). Various media representatives were invited for a pre-previewing of the next 2011 games to be released. The VIP party allowed for media guest to talk to vendors and play the games while enjoying complimentary food and beverages.

The public viewing held over 1,000 RSVPs and a long winding lineup of interested gammers. The public waited around 30 minutes to enter the Sony Center but were rewarded with a colourful T-shirt, toy cube, and Sony wayfarers.

Into the lobby was a PlayStation branded DJ booth with an impressive screen wall equipped with a tracksuit clad DJ banging out tunes.

The two story venue was equipped with different game stations for gammers to try out the new games. The event showcased feature games from third party developers like Activision, Disney, Konami, EA, Namco, Ubisoft, Warner, the list goes on.

Both floors featured the titles that can be expected to sell in huge numbers this holiday season.

Killzone 3 (Guerilla Games) is the next installment of the blood bath battle game is now in 3D.

Gran Turismo 5 (Polyphony Digital) also now in 3D was hosted in an arcade style car cabin simulator equipped with steering wheel and pedals to play this classic game.

SOCOM 4: Special Forces (PlayStation Move). SOCOM was placed with the Move games, Sony’s new motion sensor enhanced games (similar to the motion games of the Wii). The controller is used in the “gun peripheral shell casing” and looks like a gun from the Jetson’s with its glowing orb tip. I felt like I was more likely to shoot out a Nerf arrow or bubbles than be able to shoot down my target.

Upstairs featured some of the games with the biggest buzz right now, Rock Band 3, DJ Rapstar and DJ Hero 2.

Clearly it sounds like you put those three together and you’ve got the next Linkin Park but sadly gladly that is still a few years away.

Rock Band 3 has new tracks, better graphics, but most importantly, it expands upon previous games by including three-part vocal harmonies and support for a MIDI-compatible keyboard instrument. A PRO mode has been included, designed to be a learning tool for eager musicians. MadCatz and Fender will be manufacturing controllers and add-ons to support the Pro mode.

DJ Rapstar – Players karaoke to hip-hop music videos and are scored for their lyrics and rhythm. A pop-up screen records your performance, so you can judge yourself on your own hip-hop style. (NOTE: Please try this alone at home first.)

DJ Hero 2 Mix 2gether. The next step with DJ Hero, is have a sidekick. New songs and you DJ battle against an opponent for even more mash-ups.

The introduction of Playstation Move makes your Playstation console your next level Wii console. Movement censored handheld orbs direct your character on screen, like the Nintendo Wii. The controllers are black and have glowing orbs at the end, which glow blue or red. Wii was such an interactive hit that it is no surprise Playstation came out with their own action console.

The controllers have good weight and are easy to control with functional buttons. The controllers need more functionality when in the “gun peripheral shell casing”, buttons are blocked and you cant easily access second functions. The glowing orbs at the end are a bit too showy, especially when playing some slashing medieval game. On screen you’re slaying a dragon, in your living room you’re dancing with a lit-up ice cream cone shouting at Fyer tuck.

It’s going to be a big Holiday season for PS, just don’t forget to go outside for some fresh air and exercise every once in a while.
