Because the Middle-East was the cradle of this past year’s revolutionary flame, being Arab is “cool”. Yassin is careful when he talks publicly about these spurts of enthusiasm for the Arab world. Something he doesn’t want to see though, is another Iraq – which some have warned could happen to Libya.

“I think NATO shouldn’t have been there in the first place, but I am not Libyan.”
His book, the “Diatribes of a Dying Tribe” is a mutiny against fear and an ode to Hip-Hop as a border-free initiative.

The Narcicyst is not only about identity dialectic and Hip-Hop history. When it comes to sytle, he does not politicize the ‘fashion-shit’ but he makes a statement on the small details. During his travels south of the border with his brothers of the Arab Summit, Yassin wore an haute-couture suit. “Islam St-Laurent,” he called it. He’s more of a Tom Ford or Ralph Lauren guy, actually. He scavenges the Turkish markets for things men wouldn’t ordinarily accessorize with. Case in point: the necklace he is wearing in the above photo is a door-knocker that he put on a chunky chain.  Mixing traditional dress and modern brands are part of his daily routine.

“We have these amazing articles of clothing that only we can pull off. From the dish dashes to the accessories to the jewellery, the robes… To juxtapose both is natural for me. Whatever I am rocking has some sort of influence. It’s always there, but not always as loud.”
Just one more reason to “love himself” then, and give back to the community through Hip-Hop music.

Yassin Alsalman is part of the exhibit Arab Winter, for which he curated the music and multimedia. The exhibit goes on until January 30th at the Under Pressure Fresh Paint Gallery, 180 St Catherine East.
