Lifestyle Upgrade: Grado Headphones

Since the beginning of recorded sound, headphones have been an important and popular medium for enjoying music. They determine how your music is going to sound, so they’re worth some consideration even if you’re not a very picky listener. Like a good pair of shoes, a good pair of headphones will become part of your life and are easy to appreciate.

Being a headphone nerd, I have several different pairs that I use in various circumstances. There are many styles of headphone and each one offers its own functionality. When walking outside, earbud headphones that block out the noise of traffic might be your preference, and when at home open-ear headphones that deliver really clear sound are better.

The open-ear style headphones are interesting. They are over-the-head type but don’t muffle the sound like big “DJ-style” headphones do. This makes them really good for when you’re at home and want to enjoy your music without the sound being cupped to your ears. The only downside of the open ear design is that they’re not ideal for loud environments since they allow sound in and out easily. People will be able to hear your music if you crank them on public transit.

Brooklyn-based company Grado Labs, have been around for over 50 years and have a well established reputation as makers of headphones and phono cartridges. Well-known in the to audiophiles, they have flown under the mass-market radar and with high end models priced up to $1500USD for a pair you can understand why.

The SR-80i retails for around $100USD and the relatively minimal investment will offer you a product that will absolutely destroy your iPod headphones, giving you a rich listening experience.

What truly sets them apart is minimal design factor. No excessive branding or plastic chunkiness throughout the product line. Grado focuses on delivering sound quality and not skittles rainbow colours on your head.
