Le Gros Jambon

Le Gros Jambon is a new-ish diner style resto in Old Montreal that I’ve frequented a few times- but exclusively for Brunch. The atmosphere  and staff are laid-back but stylish and engaging. As you grab a stool, the men behind the counter smile and ask: “How’s it going?”, as if you’re old friends. There’s nothing quite like sipping a strong cup of coffee and taking in the beautiful sights and smells of the chef hustling to cure your grumbling tummy. Wang Chung and Billy Idol play at the perfect volume, making you feel like the moment could be captured in the opening credits of an 80′s flick. Totally familiar, totally comfortable, totally cool.

During the day, rumor has it that hot shots in suits pop in and out for burgers, hotdogs, grilled-cheese, etc.. On the weekends, it’s open late to satisfy the Montreal-party community’s need for post-dancing poutine. I’ve only heard wonderful things about the lunch and dinner items but seeing as I haven’t had the pleasure, I can only write about what I know, so here we are (update to follow, I PROMISE!!).

I will avoid sharing my thoughts (complaints) on the lack of worthwhile breakfast establishments in Montreal – for now. Suffice to say that while I had my … “misgivings”… at first, any breakfast sandwich that pops into my dreams weeks later is really THAT good. Behold: the Egg BLT, love of my life and soother of my soul, you are perfect in every way. If only I could have two of you without feeling like A Gros Cochon. 2nd and 3rd place Ribbons go to the Fried Chicken & Waffles and (lonely) Egg Benedict.

The food here is the star, no question. But it’s the easy going ambiance at Le Gros Jambon that makes it the perfect spot to grab a quick bite with a friend in Old Montreal before you continue on your stroll down towards the water.
