Igloofest 2011 has hit Montreal for it’s 5th year of electronic winter wonderland spectacular.

No doubt, Melissa Young better known as, Kid Sister will get the ladies touching their toes in their one piece snowsuits as she hits the stage on Thursday January 20, 2011.

I had the chance to speak with Kid Sister before she comes to join us in the glorious (and at time of publishing, very cold) North.

A year and a half has gone by since Kid Sister has set foot on Montreal soil, excitedly she awaits her arrival for Igloofest 2011. Last visit was fun in the sun for this hip-hop/electro sensation at the summer MEG Festival.

You would have been blissfully taken to the dance floor by her the popular hits Control (Now on DJ Hero) and Pro Nails (now featuring Kanye West and remixed by Rusko). But this time Kid Sister will not only be performing beloved classics from her 2009 album Ultraviolet, she will also launch “a lot of the new songs from the new mixtape, Kiss Kiss Kiss, and according to KS, “there’s lots of surprises”.

Working with producer Scoop Deville, (produced Snoop Dogg – I Wanna Rock), the new sound promises be another instant manifestation of Kid Sister’s ability to transverse her lyrics and rhythms across an eclectic array of genres and sounds.

On making this mixtape with Scoop Deville, KS assures us that “you’ll hear some of his stuff on the mixtape and then you’ll hear some other stuff too, I can’t giveaway everything but it’s going to be a nice lil grab bag.” We’ve now heard the mix and it is just that, an eclectic mixed bag from Hip Hop and Electro/House production beasts.

“most rappers have people who write their songs for them”

Two years since making Ultraviolet, Kid Sister is still doing all her own writing. She explains that “there’s not a whole writing collective writing behind my album, I actually write every song by myself. Except for dream day, I co-wrote, but every other song that was an original song I wrote myself. So it’s a painstaking process and I think a lot of people don’t really understand it”. I assured Kid Sister that we the listeners certainly appreciate her lyrical artistry and melodic flair.

Kiss Kiss Kiss dropped at the beginning of this month. Fast-paced and punchy, the original tracks and multiple co-production credits are guaranteed to make this album a dance-a-thon go-to for the hip-hop and electro nations.
