On June 19th Mircrosoft made a major jump into the mobile front by showcasing its new tablet the Surface. Now this news isn’t anything new, but what is still a hot topic is what this will mean for its largest rival and tablet kings, Apple’s iPad. The surface will launch with two flavors; the Nvidia ARM and the Intel Core i5 Processor, with the ARM running Windows RT and Intel running Windows 8 Pro. Both versions will include a version of Microsoft Office and have the option of a cover that doubles as a keyboard something no other tablet can currently claim. The ARM version is slated to be released when Windows 8 is slated to release this fall and Intel model to be released 90 days later.
Now what does this mean for Microsoft? Microsoft has made a sincere effort with their new OS to be consistent across all platforms from phones to tablets to PCs. This is an concept pioneered by Apple and shows a commitment by Microsoft to making changes in its current paradigm. However we have not been given specific details on price or release date and that leaves some to wonder how competitive the Surface will be against current tablets, namely the new kid on the block, the Nexus 7.
Will this be another failed attempt by Microsoft to compete with Apple and Droid or will this be a surprise. Only the future knows the answer, and once more details are released we’ll chime in with our thoughts. In the meantime, if you’ve got 45minutes to kill, take a look at the Microsoft keynote of the Surface.
