Interview: Latenite Automatic

The Internet age we live in has created big new things for our generation. Facebook, email, torrent files, and so on. Another thing we have gained is the ability for bands to create music in a way that was not possible decades ago. One band that’s using those avenues to make waves is Latenite Automatic from Vancouver.

Jay Brown & Scott Whalen are Latenite Automatic and it is safe to say they are a power duo. They got together a little over a year ago while they were both working on other creative projects, and their shared love for rock music in all its forms lead to them forming Latenite Automatic and creating music together. Both being busy musicians with day jobs (a man’s gotta eat), it is difficult for them to find time when they can get together and record the music. But through the powers of the Internet and all its wonders, they are able to share their latest creations almost instantly. “We live in a day & age where I can sit at home on my computer, work on something, toss it into Dropbox, and Jay has it in a second.”

This method is not the only thing different with this band (I’m not going to begin to touch on the fact they were both wearing an abundance of makeup during our interview). Jay touched on the creative process a bit between sips of Caesar “It’s almost like we are reverse engineering a band. Most bands get into a room, start jamming and then songs come from that. With Latenite Automatic we write the songs first then find a way to play them and record it.” This method has lead to both members having to learn new tricks as musicians. “We are both rock guys but with these songs we are making them like DJs do.” This means long hours in front of their computers with music editing software, headphones and a few cocktails.

Through the months of emails, Dropbox sharing, long hours in front of a computer, hours in the recording studio and some help from Condra at Nimbus Studios the band has released two songs online for their growing fan base. Again going back to the Internet age, the band decided it was wise to just give the tracks away for free. “Songs for free is how you build an audience. If people like it, maybe somewhere down the road they will be able to help the project keep going by paying their hard earned cash for songs.” I couldn’t agree more with Jay’s logic on this one. The debut track Ghost Love and the follow up song Follower have garnered much attention locally as well as abroad. The band actually has a large fan base in Germany, of all places.

The Internet is not going anywhere. It is here to stay. With that technology comes innovation and new ways to create. I’m not saying the Internet age is entirely responsible for Latenite Automatic, but we can agree it deserves a mention in the liner notes in the album (or maybe the .pdf file that comes along with the download).
