Are you big into sneakers?
I like ‘em, I’m just not into ‘em by name and that shit. But I buy everything.
What are some of your favorite retailers for sneakers/streetwear?
At home I gotta say ‘Commonwealth’ and a place name ‘Cream’.
What influences you guys now musically? Both inside and outside of hip-hop, who or what do you look to for inspiration?
My inspiration is just the spirit of competition. I definitely don’t look to any of these guys for inspiration. There’s nothing that I even hear that makes me wanna rap. You know what I listen to? I listen to old biggie freestyles, that makes me wanna rap.
The energy he had back then?
Yeah…I listen to old DJ Clue mixtapes with Jay-Z freestyling, Foxy Brown freestyling, and The LOX. When I hear the lox freestyle at the top of the tape and in the middle of the tape from back in the day. That makes me wanna freestyle..makes me wanna rap. The old Outkast albums make me wanna rap. A couple things…nostalgic.
Yeah I mean, our Bape comes from Japan. All the time. When I come home now, I’ll have a Bape express box in front of my door and its gonna say Bape Express, its gonna be written in Japanese, and I’m gonna open it and its gonna be whatever its gonna be.
Without being redundant, if we put legends aside, who would in your top 5 rappers right now?
Wow…ok that I wanna hear…Styles P is definitely in there…I feel like I wanna hear Jadakiss, I want to hear AB Liva of the RE-UP Gang …definitely…Who else do I wanna hear spits that demon…I don’t want to hear much more.
Is there anyone outside of that, outside of hip-hop that you’d wanna work with?
I mentioned a few producers…i like Kanye…wanna work with him, and any other artists…I don’t know who’s good?
Mmmm Fab’s out right now, he was on your first album.
Oh FUCK yeah…I’m on his album, hellz yeah…of fuck yeah how did I forget Fab, put him in my top. He’s definitely in my top five. He’s got some sick-ass freestyles.
(pauses to answer his blackberry) Me and Fab got a record. Oh my god.
How do you think you’ve grown as an artist since lord willin’?
The music business is with me these days.
Does that take the fun out of it?
Yeah it takes the fun out of it because I’m not naïve anymore. I’m very realistic with everything. But creatively I love it. The rush of finishing your verse and somebody snapping off because you said some crazy shit that never dies.
In shows do you do any mixtape tracks? do the fans respond?
We definitely do fuck with the mixtape shit. The cult following of the Clipse is just nuts. Everybody knows ‘We Got it 4 Cheap Vol. 2’ like the know HHNF and Lord Willin’.
How does your style differ from your brothers?
I think my style is a bit more rebellious than my brothers, his is a lot more grown, when he raps sometimes, I think he’s talking down on me.
Negatively or positively?
Negatively. (laughs) I mean he just talks like that to me.
Outside of the records too?
Nah…everything just has to make sense to him. Everything. That’s just him. Just his thing.
Growing up, your 5 years apart…were you always together always close or is the music thing helped?
We were always close as brothers. Being 5 years apart its like you always have that look up to type of thing going on. With my brother anyway. I used to run behind him…I wanna go I wanna go…no you cant/ get away from me. My mom would make him take me. We’ve always been close.
Does that help you working together
Yeah that’s never a problem.
Really good talking with you.
For sure. Cool.
Peace.
