Grown Ups (2010)

Directed by Dennis Dugan (Happy Gilmore, Big Daddy, Saving Silverman)
Written by Adam Sandler and Fred Wolf
With Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider and David Spade

Tag Line: Boys will be boys … some longer than others

Reunited after 30 years, 5 close friends and their families find themselves at a lake house for the Fourth of July weekend. Each man having gone his own direction, the 5 former basketball teammates take the time to reflect on their childhoods.

Lenny Feder (Sandler) is as rich as Billy Madison and as gold-hearted as Longfellow Deeds. Mix in Sonny Koufax’s emotive father’s love speech and you have the “newest” Adam Sandler role.

Eric Lamonsoff (James) is fat and broke. Doug Heffernan… I mean Lamonsoff portrays a very comical and convincing family man. Looks great in a wet suit.

Kurt McKenzie (Rock), a stay at home dad, may or may not have a thing for the maybe or maybe not the nanny. He is especially good at making quips about his family life and elderly mother-inlaw.

Rob Hilliard (Schneider) is on his third marriage with 3 daughters and an odd new wife. His hair screams little man complex and his vegan tastes screams for salt. Don’t worry, his daughters make up for it.

Marcus Higgins (Spade) is drunk most of the time and has no kids.

This is a movie you want to bring a notepad too. It is rich in witty banter and applicable to most real-life scenarios. Have a friend with bunions? They will be the toe-end of all conversations.

Movie theatre worthy just to hear the stranger beside you laughing. It is not the typical far-out outrageousness we all know and long for from the Adam Sandler classics, but it has its moments. Grownups is more of  a family feel-good than a profanity ridden knee slapper. You aren’t going to miss anything if you don’t see it right away… if you are in need of some “awws” or “isn’t that sweet” shit, you’ll get that here.
