Forget about a pristine gallery, f*ck theaters and their velvet ropes. On May third come on down to Pointe Saint Charles and get ready to kick it with us, house party style! We have received contributions from over a dozen of our friends and fellow artists, what is more, the Home Theater Festival is part of an international, multi-city initiative to liberate performance and visual arts from the confines and power dynamics of the institutionalized art world.

Remember friends: HOME IS WHERE THE ART IS!

There will be music, live performances, video, installation art and lots of beautiful party people having a great time with each other dancing our pants off. Thanks to the new pocket sized SLUSSEN device and iphone app from URBANEARS, anyone with an IPhone or IPad can DJ the party so make a playlist of your favorite house party jams and get ready to kick it up a notch. DJ New Money and DJ Funk will be leading the way with live sets, but we have a bunch of SLUSSENs to give away to whoever wants to take over the sound system too!

As with any good old house party, it’s a good idea to BYOB. It will be a pay what you can sort of thing, with all proceeds going to the contributing artists.

For information on the larger frame of the home theater festival, visit their website.

For the details on the participants and their proposals check the event info page here.

Maylee Todd is a character. Understatement. Her fantastical visions of sight and sound are played out at her whim. The singer/songwriter released her sophomore album, Escapology, to much acclaim, but you’d think the LP was a drop in the bucket to her other projects on the go. Everything she touches turns into a remixed Lewis Carroll novel. Elaborate costumes, huge band ensembles, spontaneous jam sessions. It’s a world that we can only visit and gaze in awe while she pieces it as it comes.

While “Escapology” is filled with songs of longing and heartache, the purity in her voice remains, and the visuals astound. We got a chance to catch up with Maylee as she sounds off on her life in the ‘weirdo lane,’ Filipino fashionistas, and having a little help from her friends.

First things first. Tell us about the new album.

The album is…a bunch of therapy sessions. A very personal diary. Writing down emotion and personal experiences. I would write them down, then “escape” and gain some perspective, come back, and continue writing.

[I wrote] a lot of songs that didn’t make the cut. The ones that I felt excited about I kept working on. They’re the songs I felt were important.

As cliché as it might sound, is love a more resonant topic to write about?

In that phase of my life, absolutely. Love for myself, and one person in particular. It was huge, at that point. That was my life. It was fresh and currently happening. Taking up a lot of mental energy. It felt natural to just write about it.

How important are the notions of community and collaboration when it comes to the creation of your projects?

It’s so important. It’s huge. It’s massive, I’d say. Toronto has an incredible community. Everyone likes to work and play. I think for me it’s very exciting to meet a very creative person. I’d bring something to the table. They’d bring some things to the table. And we’d work very intensely for three days or a month 9am-9pm, jamming on ideas. Inspiring each other and creating content. The process is really fun.

That aspect is probably my favorite because I really get to know the person and see them in many different lights. See how they operate and function. Then we’d come up with a cool product. And then the product would be like a photo album like ‘remember when we did that?’

I do a lot of work alone, so collaborating with other people is exciting because it is both social time and accountable time. Both ways serve great purposes. I wouldn’t say I do one thing more than the other. I might be alone for a month or working with someone for a month.

One could say your devotion to fashion and costume design is on display as much as your music.

I love fashion. What an exciting way to express yourself, right? I probably took a note from my mom’s life book. She used to put a bunch of patterns together and made it work. She’s like that lady you’d see on Spadina Avenue with like 50 jackets on, 40 socks, and a tulip scarf. She’s a misfit. I definitely was inspired by her. Everyone in the family dressed a little kooky. I’m probably the weirdest of my three sisters at this point.

You’ve once said that you’re comfortable in playing ‘the weirdo card’ because it affords you a particular creative freedom?

Absolutely. There were so many times in high school where people would be like “she’s so weird.” and I’d be like, “I can play the weird card AND get away with it?” So amazing. So liberating. I’ve seen the pressures of an individual having to be perfect and always looking a particular way. It’s a lot of stress. I don’t know if it’s really me. I’m really enjoying this type of freedom and have been.

You’re more inclined to speak on the technical aspects of your act rather than the more superficial trappings.

Oh yeah. People are going to have their opinions about you anyhow, so you might as well be as honest with yourself as possible. I’ve made peace with myself (with self perception) a long time ago. I would always be more excited with the technical aspects that artists would talk about because that’s where I’d draw great ideas from. Even from a young age, I would always be more into the little Quincy chats about (Michael Jackson’s) Off The Wall. I’m always into the making of things more than the final product.

What’s the next artistic dragon that you’re looking to slay?

I’ve started working on thing called the Tiorion. I’ve been using it as a controller and rack gear. So I’d like to explore that more. I’d like to explore beat making a bit more. I’d also like to become a better musician over all. I’ve touched upon so many instruments, so I think it might beneficial for me to learn stuff like…scales? [laughs].

I really hope that I can continue to create art. There’s nothing in particular I’d want to do, but there are so many things I want to do. I just hope I can continue to do them them and support myself financially. I know the things I want to do always tend to change, so I don’t want to put myself in a box.

Do you believe in trajectory in your career or is the intrinsic value of expression a bigger priority to you?

If that happens, that’s great. But if I worry about it, then it would drive me mad, and then that perception would shape my creative side of things. I’m not really interested in doing that.At the end of the day I don’t want to have to compromise what I do.

When I look back, I want to be able to say I didn’t compromise anything for anyone. It represents me and who I am and I want to be honest about it.

Maylee Todd’s ‘Escapology’ available now via Do Right! Music.

The Spot

In an unassuming strip mall storefront just a few minutes off of the strip, Fruition Las Vegas is so much more than a vintage shop. Fruition has just about the freshest collection of vintage streetwear and custom creations we have come across yet. Many vintage stores are packed to the rafters with racks of treasures and awesome odds and ends; but lack any distinct flavor or theme to tie it all together. In terms of the selection process at Fruition, we can only say that their standards for quality and style are high and that their curatorial eye is on point. What you get at Fruition is not simply an assortment of beautiful garments and accessories but a cohesive collection of fantastic pieces which all play off of each other, making the store as a whole so much more than it’s individual parts.

What’s Really Good

This isn’t your average vintage shop, here, the attention to detail goes well beyond the clothes on the racks; it extends to the racks themselves, the art on the walls and even the publications available. Walking into Fruition is like walking into a living breathing lifestyle editorial. They only carry the freshest in fashion forward vintage gear (there’s a paradox for ya). We can’t say where they source their products, however, we can say that the proper research is done to ensure that the pieces are authentic. They have a great selection of vintage, but it’s the brand collaborations and limited run custom pieces which truly stand out. The staff are great too. Obviously, they are super stylish but they are also friendly, knowledgeable and honest with their advice. All things considered Fruition has far more to offer than one might expect from their humble stripmall storefront.

You’ll Want to know

Getting past the distractions of the Las Vegas strip can be a bit of a task in itself. If you can pull yourself away from the slots for an afternoon, a trip to Fruition is like a stylish breath of fresh air when you’re being smothered by the omnipresent douchebaggery.

However there is one warning that you should keep in mind. You’re gonna want to buy everything (thats not the warning) unfortunately, as is the nature of vintage and limited edition customized articles of clothing, they won’t necessarily have a full size selection, so we advise you to take your time and try things on before you buy. On the other hand, Fruition’s online shopping game is on point too.
Self professed L.A hippie, Adina Mills has made it onto our radar thanks to her handcrafted accessories but also due in a large part to her amazingly positive outlook on life. She’s one of those people who makes big life decisions seem like a cake walk. For example, take everyone’s favorite existential “what am I doing with my life?” moment.

After floundering in a 9-5 job and not feeling whole or rewarded in life, the L.A native decided to walk away from the security and stability of office life, and head back to school to get her teaching credentials. A self-taught artist, Adina thought it might be fun to get kids interested in art but there was one problem; In the United States, to teach art you have to have had it taught to you.

While she’s been an active artist her whole life, Adina never took any registered art classes. She decided to enroll in a sculpture class and was lucky enough to have her art teacher take her under his wing. However, at that point Adina started to feel as though she was just choosing teaching for the sake of finding a direction. She realized she was much more into making art than teaching it. What she loved most of all was sculpting, and working with her hands.

Adina’s teacher really encouraged her to develop her work. She was already doing wire wrapping and basic jewelry making with stones but once she saw what she could really do, Adina decided to just go for it and make these pieces for herself. Pretty quickly, friends and family started commissioning pieces. Adina then started getting into doing flea markets and eventually looked at other venues to see where she might go next. Today her work is featured in stores across the US and in Canada as well.

We crossed paths with Adina at Paris’ Capsule tradeshow this past March. Her jewelry is not stocked in the city of lights just yet, but that may soon change. In the middle of our interview, two very enthusiastic business-minded women turned up and nearly took her entire collection with them. Their reaction wasn’t too different from our own upon discovering Adina’s work. It’s hard not to take notice, there are so many vibrant colors, play on textures and variety to engage her clientele.

While the idea itself is quite a simple one – rocks embedded in resin – the creative process Adina embarks on for each collection is a bit more complicated. It’s long process, and a merciless one at that. Because she never reshapes the stones, she must adapt the resin to create the base of the ring. On the upside working with stones is pretty seasonless, which suits Adina who prefers to concentrate on making exactly what she wants regardless of being on trend. Though she did quite a good job this year, accidentally hitting the nail on the head with her collection of neon colored pieces.

Part of the reason she opts out of keeping up with seasons and what’s “in” at any given moment, is because she considers her work first and foremost art. But that’s not to say she sits on a high horse. She fully accepts straddling a world where inspired creation is key, all the while building her accessories brand from the ground up. It isn’t always easy being positioned between both worlds, but Adina makes it work by playing up the idea of “Wearable Art” and staying true to her L.A city-hippie roots.

If her happy disposition, outlook on life and refusal to bend with the whims of each seasons trendscape isn’t reason enough of a reason to keep your eye on Adina Mills, consider that during our short interview not one but two jewelry agents descended upon us (literally reaching over our heads with their massive feather coat covered arms,) yanking all her work off the table. They went on to demand all her stock and promised her immediate representation in Paris. She barely had time to speak two words, though that might be a good thing considering she doesn’t speak french. Then again, she clearly didn’t have two; her work speaks for itself.

Apologies for the week-long delay is posting. I fell down 2 flights of stairs (in an L shape I might add) and sprained my ankle pretty badly – not a pretty picture! Thank GOODNESS it was only a sprain… too bad it took 1 clinic, 1 hospital, and 4 hours to find out. I’ve never used crutches before in my life…how many of you have subjected your poor armpits to such torture? Now that I think about it, I would love to see a slow-mo version of what happened. I imagine it looked a little something like this.

Back to the topic at hand…music. Afrojack came on Friday but I missed out because of my foot. I did, however, catch trance superstar Gareth Emery last night and it was INCREDIBLE. In fact, I have now been awake for 24+ hours, not QUITE sure how I am functioning. I haven’t pulled an all-nighter in… a long time. Gareth played this ridiculous song I’ve never heard of…Meet Her In Miami. WOW. JUST WOW. Where did this come from? It has been playing on repeat since 5 am about 99 thousand times.

I’ve also discovered Canadian OVERWERK‘s latest track, 12:30. This song is truly beastly and features the typical OVERWERK electro/dub/house style. Check it out below!

The Spot

416 Snack Bar is a bar, that serves snacks. The premise is fairly straightforward, but if that doesn’t sound like a winning combination to you, then maybe we need to rethink our relationship. Despite its limited capacity, Snack Bar has everything you could ask for in a local hangout: amazing food and refreshing drinks, served until last call; live DJs; loyal patrons and a sweet location just north of Queen on Bathurst. Landing gracefully between the worlds of restaurant and bar, it’s the perfect place to stop in for a casual drink or some late night munchables. From the outside, simple aluminum siding and hand painted signage belies what has quickly become one of the premier destinations for the hungry and thirsty masses of the GTA. Once you step in the door, the interior aesthetic is a rough, wood, steel, and concrete homage to the city which raised us.

What’s Really Good

Boy oh boy, the snacks… where to even start. Even though their menu changes all the time it is hard to go wrong. Staples like oysters and sparkling wine always hold down a spot, but part of the fun is just trying to decide what to order on any given night! You know its gonna be a great time when the biggest question you’re facing is whether to get the trini doubles or the mini mac, the korean fried chicken or the reuben sandwich, or the fish, pork or veggie steamed bun. Honestly though, thanks to the snack sized portions, cutlery is hardly needed, and no one will judge you if you ordered everything on the menu!

You’ll Want to Know

Straight up, there should be a 416 Snack Bar for every area code in the nation. Alas, there isn’t, so this one can get pretty packed. The close quarters and intimate vibe keep it casual but at times it can get a little loud. If you’re going on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday get there early. To be perfectly honest we would recommend heading over for a weeknight libation; you will be able to avoid the crowds, and lets face it, every night is better with some snacks. Like so many of Toronto’s hidden treasures, you’ll have to keep an eye out the first time, but once you’re in the know, this is one location that you will find hard to pass by.

In keeping with our French theme as of late, for this round of the WRG mixtape, we have handed the reigns over to Giulietta Canzani aka Piu Piu. Besides exercising her talents as a vocalist and a song writer, the half French half Uruguayan beauty also happens to be one of Paris most legitimate djettes.

Not only does she hold her own during sets, but if your lucky and listen carefully enough when she mixes you might just catch her slipping one of her newest songs into her set.

She’s also part of the brains (and beauty, obvi) behind the Girls Girls Girls crew. This international collective of talented women includes DJs, graphic designers, photographers, dancers and film-makers. All of whom have come together for a common cause: getting the party going on their own terms. This summer their slated to hop across the pond, heating things up in NYC and LA.

Also, keep your eyes peeled for Piu Piu’s album release over the next few weeks. On top of her own talented self writing and singing on every track, the album features samples ranging from Limbo (yes, the video game,) to Ennio Morricone (if you don’t know him, shame on you) and boasts producers by the likes of her brother (French Fries), Bambounou, Ryan Hemsworth (go Canada!) and Myth Syzer. All in all the album is stacking up to be a good one. Double yay, she’s releasing it for free!

In the meantime, Piu Piu has put together a mixtape that is sure to send many of us back to a place we know all to well: the all consuming crush. You know, that person you just can’t get off your mind no matter how hard you try. So much so that every song you hear on the radio is just. So. Totally. About That Person. And you hate that you can’t stop thinking about them, but you can’t help it because, ugh, you just like them SO. MUCH. Who’s this dedicated to? Piu Piu never tells…

The Spot

Just west of Trinity Bellwoods on the north side of Queen you will find Carmen – Cocina Espanola. The warmth and inviting atmosphere of authentic spanish cuisine pours out of the open concept kitchen, fills the dining room and bursts right onto the street. Although the restaurant business can be cut throat, competition isn’t the motivating force behind this convivial meeting place. The ideals which keep Carmen grounded are humility and honesty. For executive chef Louis Valenzuelar, and the entire family at Carmen, its not about attaining perfection, it’s about doing the best you can by being true to who you are. Carmen is a place to get familiar not formal.

What’s Really Good

The food in a lot of restaurants is put on a pedestal. As foodie culture enters the mainstream, it is not uncommon to see people more concerned with dissecting the gastronomical feats on offer or instagramming untouched plates than enjoying the pleasures of good food with good friends. In case you’re unsure of how this ‘casual dining’ thing is supposed to work, instructions are printed right there on the menu: “Spain’s celebrated rice dish [paella] is meant to be shared in a lighthearted and casual manner.” This community oriented mentality underscores the entire menu at Carmen, the idea is to use great food as the vehicle for bringing friends together. From the finger food tapas dishes to the salads and entrees each dish begs to to be passed around and shared together. The focus is on the people and the experience, so when the shrimp are served straight off the grill and the paella is topped with an entire lobster, don’t let the shells intimidate you, get in there, get your hands dirty and enjoy the moment! (yolo right?)

You’ll Want to Know

There are two distinct, but equally charming sections at Carmen, complete with their own menus. The main dining room is open to the kitchen and is where you really get a sense of the love and camaraderie which goes into every dish. At the front of the restaurant is a chic cocktail bar. This is the perfect area to meet a friend for a drink or stop for a bite off of the Menu Del Bar (aka Late night snack menu, aka greatest words in the english/ spanish language). Even after a full meal we couldn’t resist tasting a few items off the Menu Del Bar, the home-canned Sardinas En Tomate were simply delicious and certainly worth stopping in for; who knows, it could be the start of a beautiful relationship.

Have you ever wanted to be someone else for an evening? Do you dream of being invited to a secret location and actually knowing the special handshake that grants you access to one of the world’s most exclusive parties?

Let’s be honest, everyone wants to be one of the cool kids. In celebration of their 150th anniversary Perrier is getting into the festive spirit with a digital experience, Perrier Secret Place, that offers you a chance to win the trip of a lifetime. In creating an interactive video world for you to explore perrier has brought the “choose your own adventure” concept to a whole new level by allowing you to live out the journey of any of the 60 characters in search for the Perrier bottle.

This digital adventure is brought to fruition through the camera of director Laurent King. This Parisian cinematographer has achieved success in both film and digital platforms. Having been director of photography for several small TV projects, produced music videos, commercials and documentaries, he was the obvious choice for this project. Not to mention the fact that the whole project was shot in his own backyard (okay not literally but Paris is his original stomping ground). An hour and twenty minutes has been directed, produced and edited for your gaming pleasure; this is indeed a fully interactive film.

Once you’ve entered the digital world of the Perrier Secret Place, you will instantly notice the playful com

position of the cinematic shots, the iconic architecture of a typical Parisian apartment and the development of this mysterious scenario. King’s signature long take technique adds to the dramatic effect of the narrative upon which the Perrier Secret Place project is built.

Explore the site for yourself and get lost into the world of secret locations, seductive partygoers and one special bottle of Perrier that may just be the key to whisking you away to St Tropez, Miami, Rio de Janeiro or Ibiza.

Peruse with intent and be sure to pay attention for the 5 clues you’ll find along the way.

Build Quality:

The first thing I noticed about the the RHA SA950i headphones was that they were so compact that they actually fit comfortably on my small ears. It’s possible that I had never actually worn on-ear headphones before? Maybe. It’s hard out there for a small eared lady in the headphone world you know! Every headset makes us look like a prepubescent wise-ass who could only afford those gigantic silver headphones with the mile long chord. But these RHA headphones look awesome on and also pack quite the sound punch.

These sleek headphones may only have a lightweight frame, but don’t think these things can’t take a beating. If you like to live dangerously, like me, and throw everything you own into a book bag these are perfect, not only because they are super light (105g) but they also have a tough exterior that is so confident in its design, it’s backed by a three year warranty.

The SA 950i boasts professional grade audio components that are “more commonly found in full-sized studio equipment” and we definitely believe it. The set is also designed to work with your various iOS devices and have a built in microphone and remote on the detachable braided cable which is fixtured with gold plated connectors. Once I adjusted the headphones, I was surprised to find that I was able to actually do a whole hour of intense housework without having them slip off of my head which is something I’ve very rarely seen in a outer ear headphone.

Sound:
As for sound quality, I ripped through my iPod library and listened to everything from Nina Simone to Wavves. While they weren’t the best for listening to old school Blood Brothers albums, they did deliver great quality in almost every other genre. I was able to use these headphones to and from work which is a huge plus too since my entire transit is on the metro. The only time I started hearing people around me was when I started passing the bars on Mont Royal which were jam packed with drunks eager for patio weather.

While I mostly used them on my iPhone 4S seamlessly taking calls with their inline remote and mic and used them to watch shows my Macbook Pro. I also tested them out on a Samsung galaxy S3’s with its custom E3 equalizer. It did make some of the levels better, but overall they could handle a vast sound range and bass levels.

Our take:

What’s Really Good: All in all these lightweight and stylish headphones are definitely a better quality of headset you’ll find in its price bracket.

The Deal: The sound isn’t great across the board, but its mostly due to the size of the earpieces.

These are definitely my new go to headphones for daily use. Whatever those crazy Brits are doing over at RHA, they’re doing one hell of a job keeping their products affordable, high quality and looking badass.

Mother Nature seems intent on reminding us that spring has not yet totally sprung, but that hasn’t stopped us from dreaming of warmer days! GUESS, with help from FLARE, recently launched their new Festival Collection with a soirée on April 4th in Toronto and we were on hand to check out all the high waisted denim, boho printed tanks, fringe, and neons that accentuate this season’s collection.

The night’s hosts, Erin O’Brien, editor of FLARE, Michelle and Rachelle from FrontRowMag.com, and Gracie Carroll of GracieCarroll.com chatted with us about festival trends. We discussed everything from how “neon is always a thing,” what trends they’d like to stop seeing (how does Vanessa Hudgens manage to hit every festival??), and their favourite festivals (Digital Dreams music festival and the positive energy behind SARSfest rank up there in local festivals).

No matter what festival you’re hitting up, or what your style looks like normally, the four of them agree that festivals give you license to go boho, be extreme, and have fun finding your ‘festival personality’. Gracie names Alexa Chung, Kate Moss and Diane Kruger as her style inspirations as we chat about who’s on point with festival dressing. Check the top five trends below and prepare to rock the heck out of your festival plans this summer!

Top 5 festival trends:

1. Ripped denim – take creative license with the length, high waisted shorty-shorts to a slouchy boyfriend denim.

2.
A fringed bag – Erin added “long chain” and then specifies “make it an over the shoulder messenger” – we’re stylish, but also practical

3.
Rainwear – (did I mention how practical we are?) A poncho and a sturdy pair of Wellies are key for when the weather going gets tough and the tough don’t want to get going.

4.
Floral and/or studded headbands - Michelle of FrontRowMag is leaning towards studs this season.

5. Leopard print – Michelle confesses she’s obsessed but all four ladies agree that being fearless with all patterns is key!
