We recently had a chance to sit down with Sarah Lerfel, the famously camera shy mastermind behind all the shiny trinkets, books, magazines and pretty clothes for sale at Colette.
She may be shy, but she’s certainly not scared of speaking her mind: she’ll be the first one to tell you (and she’s quite adamant about this,) that she doesn’t pick the items featured at Collette for any reason (read marketing, trend or hype as some have suggested,) other than that they tickle her fancy.
It’s how she started things at the know infamous store, and how she plans to keep them going. If she’s indeed being honest, she has quite the range of personal tastes.
But that’s kind of the point. Lerfel has never wanted anyone to feel as though they couldn’t shop at her store. (If today’s crowds are any indicator, Colette seems to be in quite good standing among the youngsters and the oldies.)
Always looking ahead, but never looking past her comfortable spot at 213 Rue Saint Honoré, Sarah is quite content with her single location status. She is distinctly Parisian and doesn’t see much point in attempting an expansion of the brand that’s been credited with bringing life and money back to a district of Paris that had been a bit neglected in previous years.
Here is the audio portion of our interview, as well as a quick look around the one stop fashionable shop, Colette.
P.S. Keep an eye out for the Terry Richardson exhibit at Colette this March at fashion week.
