City DNA

Chinese artist Lu Xinjian has taken ariel views from google earth and abstracted them, turning them into colorful pattern-like renderings. With this series titled City DNA, It’s hard not to draw parallels between Lu and Keith Haring. That is, until you look into the artist’s process.

Lu will first sketch out the designs he sees on the maps, next he turns them into stencils that he can use in illustrator, and after that the painter will use a cutting plotter before finally painting the design with acrylic on canvas.

Each design reflects the structure of the city used, and the colors are chosen based on national flags. Can you guess wich paintings represent which countries?
