Amidst the hustle, bustle and bright lights of Bourbon Street there are still sophisticated establishments in the New Orleans French Quarter. Bar Tonique would certainly fit the bill for sophistication in a sea of less than memorable watering holes. In an intimate candlelit room across from Louis Armstrong Park, Bar Tonique features a selection of rare liquors, craft beers and an excellent cocktail program. The crowd is an eclectic mix of twenty-somethings who all appear to be long over the neon lights, noise and trashiness of Bourbon Street.

What’s Really Good?

The cocktails are set apart by their thoroughly handmade element: this includes house-made tonic water, ginger beer and fresh squeezed juices. If you’re looking for a good local beer try the NOLA Blonde, a simple and refreshing blonde ale. If cocktails are your thing, the Sazerac is a must, dating back to about 1830 this locally invented beauty is made with Rittenhouse Rye, herbsaint, gum syrup, bitters and lemon peel and will set you back a reasonable $8.
