Banksy is in my opinion the top of the graffiti artists in the street art world. From the UK, his work is on the streets in cities all over the world from London to LA to NYC to New Orleans to the seperation wall on the Palestinan West Bank. Who Banksy truly is remains a mystery as he refuses to be photographed or filmed. The film ‘Exit Through The Gift Shop’ is a documentary about Thierry Guetta. Thierry, the cousin of street artist Invader was a French vintage shop keeper living in LA who was obsessed with his video camera and began traveling around shooting film footage of graffiti artists . He recorded his cousin, as well as Shephard Fairey and numerous other well known graffiti artists telling them he was making a documentary about them and street art. The one artist Thierry wanted to meet and film more than anyone was Banksy. Finally through Fairey, he was introduced and had the opportunity to film him. Banksy then turned the camera back onto Thierry as he becomes the one being filmed. I really like the advice Fairey gave to those with the ambition to make it and become well known as a graffiti artist which was “repetition repetition repition” His iconic ‘Obey Giant’ is one of the most recognizable images in street art. Banksy’s description of this film was- ”Its basically the story of how one man set out to film the un—filmable. And failed”. Below is the trailer and I definitely recommend seeing the film. Without a doubt, this is the best film I’ve seen all year.
