Johnnie Walker x WRG Private Tasting

Winston Churchill once referred to whisky as “the oil of conversation, the philosophic wine, the elixir of life, the ale that is consumed when good fellows get together, that puts a song in their hearts and the warm glow of contentment in their eyes.”

Given this ringing endorsement from a man known for his assertiveness, self-confidence, and even cockiness, WRG couldn’t pass up the opportunity to learn more about this brown elixir for our Confidence Issue. After all, what gives you confidence better than a belly full of fire water?

Knowing the history and appreciating the different flavours of your whisky will not only give you the confidence to make an informed decision when purchasing your next glass or bottle, it will also give you the confidence to talk about it with other whisky aficionados. Mastering all the subtle differences between regions, malts, and grains can take a lifetime, but a little knowledge can still go a long way.

A quick history lesson on your drink of choice will certainly lead to a better appreciation of it. A good place to start is knowing the unique characteristics of scotch and the regions that separate it from its counterparts, whisky and bourbon. You can also amplify your overall experience by testing out different ways of sampling your whisky. Sometimes adding water to your drink will allow you to discover new layers of flavour, and pairing it with certain cheeses, nuts, or red fruits can also bring out the essence of your favorite blend.

Learning about blends, the rich history, and the many ways in which to enjoy whisky, we are confident in our basic knowledge. To channel our inner Churchill, we’re now ready for another glass, someone pass us the Blue Label.

Thank you to Johnnie Walker for the experience.
